Summer Composition Online Workshop with Kyle Saulnier
July 8-12th, 2024
Live Performance in Fall 2024 (date TBA)
All Student Compositions are performed and recorded

Dates: Monday, July 8 - Friday, July 12, 2023 from 10am - 1pm.
These half day workshop sessions via zoom will guide students to create compositions for performance with a Music-COMP ensemble modeled after Olivier Messiaen’s historic Quartet for the End of Time. Participants can write for any combination of violin, cello, clarinet (or bass clarinet), and piano. The live concert will take place on in the fall.

Cost: $300, which in addition to the workshop includes a performance (plus audio and video recording) of each student's piece. A deposit of $50 is required with registration, and the balance is due by the first class. (see registration link below)

Music-COMP offers a week-long, half-day summer workshop for students with an interest in music composition. The instructor is Kyle Saulnier, who has extensive experience as a professional composer, clinician, and performer. Kyle will guide each student as they explore various composition skills and techniques to develop works suitable for live performance. Students will interact with one another to provide feedback on each others' work.

Students will explore various aspects of composition, including harmony, melody, orchestration, and thematic development, while also taking the opportunity to become familiar with the seminal Messiaen composition that fosters this cycle’s instrumentation. Our goal is for students to grow from their own personal starting point to develop increasingly sophisticated composition skills and techniques. Each day will begin with an online check-in with Kyle and all students to discuss progress, issues and questions. The rest of the time will consist of scheduled individual time with Kyle, as well as “drop-in” sessions for quick discussions of specific issues or questions. Later in the week there will be time to share individual works in progress with the entire group for student comments and questions.

This online workshop is open to students in grades 7-12. Content and instruction not intended for true beginners or students with no composition experience.
