Summer Composition Workshop with Erik Nielsen July 22-26, Montpelier VT
Music-COMP offers a week-long, half-day summer workshop for students with an interest in music composition. The instructor is Erik Nielsen, Senior Mentor with Music-COMP, with extensive experiences as a professional composer, student workshop leader, and school composition artist-in-residence instructor. Erik will guide each student as they explore various composition skills and techniques to develop works suitable for live performance. Students will interact with one another to provide feedback on each others' work. A goal of the week is a completed piece from each student that will be performed by the professional ensemble, The Northern Third Quartet (Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello). The concert will be scheduled for winter following the workshop and take place in VPR Stetson Studio One. Audio and video recordings made for each student composer.
Students will explore various aspects of composition, including harmony, melody, orchestration, and thematic development. Each student will grow from their starting point to develop increasingly sophisticated composition skills and techniques.
Dates: Monday, July 22 - Friday, July 26, 2019 from 1-4 pm to be held at Montpelier High School, VT. These half day workshop sessions will guide students to create compositions for performance.
Cost: $250 for the session, and a deposit of $50 is required with registration with the balance due at the first class. Bring a laptop or device or rent a MHS computer for the session for $30.
This workshop is designed for students in grades 6-12 with some previous experience, although Music-COMP membership is not required.
