Music-COMP offers a week-long, half-day summer workshop for students with an interest in music composition. The instructor is Erik Nielsen, Senior Mentor with Music-COMP, with extensive experiences as a professional composer, student workshop leader, and school composition artist-in-residence instructor. Erik will guide each student as they explore various composition skills and techniques to develop works suitable for live performance. Students will interact with one another to provide feedback on each others' work.
Students will explore various aspects of composition, including harmony, melody, orchestration, and thematic development. Our goal is for students to grow from their starting point to develop increasingly sophisticated composition skills and techniques. Each day will begin with an online check-in with Erik and all students to discuss progress, issues and questions. The rest of the three hours will consist of scheduled individual time with Erik, (each student will get at least two of these per day), as well as “drop-in” sessions for quick discussions of specific issues or questions. Later in the week there will be time to share individual works in progress with the entire group for student comments and questions.
Performing musicians for this concert include some of the very best in Vermont!
