2020-21 Writing and Performance Opportunities

For the 2020-21 school year, Music-COMP will provide three different performance opportunities for our young composers. Essential Music For Essential Workers has a rolling composition process and is for designed solo pieces. These works will be remotely recorded by musicians in VT and across the country throughout the remainder of the school year. Music-COMP and the ARKA String Quartet and the Music-COMP Piano Trio both have a flexible timeline, with the only stipulation that works be completed by May 1st. In May, we will be using current guidelines and our best judgement to decide how and where to perform 15 works with each ensemble. This may be an outdoor performance or a recorded video performance - we'll be finalizing plans as we get further into the spring. If you have any questions, please contact Matt at matt@music-comp.org.

This year, we're asking that students work within a few different themes. These may be used as open ended prompts and guidance for the composition process. A great place to begin is by using our Pre-Composition Worksheet.

Hope. This can be in any form, but especially in relation to social justice and living through the COVID-19 pandemic

My Community. What is meaningful to you about your community, or living in Vermont in general?

1. Essential Music For Essential Workers (for solo instruments)

This initiative is designed to honor the role and importance essential works have played in this pandemic. Students will be composing new works dedicated to and inspired by our essential and frontline workers. We will be putting up a display in various medical offices around the state with a QR code that will bring people and listeners to a page on our website where these works will be shared.

Would you like to honor essential workers in your community?  Wouldn't it be fantastic to connect with others virtually through music while staying safe?  "Essential Music For Essential Workers" is a way you can create joy and lift spirits by creating a new music composition.  You will work with a composer-mentor to create an original piece of music online that will be made available to those working in hospitals all over Vermont through Music-COMP's ESSENTIAL MUSIC FOR VERMONT project.  Your finished project will be available for people in VT medical facilities to enjoy.  Thank you!
