Two Irish Dances
Grade 10, Harwood Union High School, Duxbury, VT
"Two Irish Dances opens with the Irish reel, Fiddler's Tune. Inspired a bit by Charlie Daniels’ The Devil Went Down To Georgia, the reel features the first violin, gliding between Cm, F, and Dm. After alternating between an arco and pizzicato version of the main tune, the reel ends with a bang and moves on to the jig, a quick dance in the key of Gm. Both movements were inspired by a relative who immigrated to the United States during the Great Potato Famine of the 1840s. I can imagine he missed the music from his homeland very much."
