A Perilous Journey

Kael Kysar

Grade 6, Rutland Intermediate School VT

"For my Opus piece I wanted to describe a journey through a dark cavern, finally ending at the other end. When I first started to work on the composition, the opening theme in the cello was the first musical idea that came to mind and when I heard it played back it inspired me to tell a story about going through a cave. The rising notes and syncopated rhythm gave it a dark sound that made me think of the darkness of being in a cave.
I wanted to combine a mixture of motives around that first, and most important, motive. Think of each motive as a different feature of the cavern or a different event along the journey."
